The Promise (2017), PG-13, ★★★

If I were to ask you if we would could go to a movie that has not had any marketing or very little marketing, I would expect the answer will be "No." because you have never heard of the movie and the title is sort of generic and not as exciting. Well, I would not blame you. I have never heard of this movie to be honest and I have not seen any trailers for this at all but I had to take the opportunity to go into a screening to see what Oscar Isaac and Christian Bale are up to in this type of epic WWI film. However, the movie is a crossover between a love triangle and also the true story of the Armenian genocide, which was a subject I have never heard about. The movie does cross into some corny territory surrounding the romance and trying to fit it like an old-school epic, however, this movie boasts enough political influence and solid performances that I got invested in this movie, a reminder how tragic an event like the Armenian genocide has become. Michael (Oscar Isaac)

Free Fire (2017), R, ★★

While watching the trailer for this movie, I was quite skeptical and amazed by the talented and large cast ensemble and also the tension within the room that is quite reminiscent and equivocal to the Quentin Tarantino's film debut, Reservoir Dogs . Now, I am going to get hate for this controversial statement that I did not enjoy his debut film because it was mostly style over substance and there are some illogical problems, even with one character lying down bleeding to death looking like he could last his whole life. This movie felt like Reservoir Dogs times 100, making the whole experience frustrating and a bit boring. The movie starts with Steve and Bernie (Sam Riley and Enzo Cilenti) on their way to meet with two IRA members, Chris and Frank (Cillian Murphy and Michael Smiley). They wait outside of a Boston warehouse and along with them is Justine (Brie Larson). A rep named Ord (Armie Hammer) gets them inside as the group is there buying weapons from arms dealer, Vernon (S

The Zookeeper's Wife (2017), PG-13, ★★★

Movies about the Holocaust or an event surrounding the Holocaust or during the Holocaust is brought about every 3-5 years and almost all events are compelling on screen and told well. You name it: Schindler's List , Life is Beautiful , The Boy in the Striped Pajamas , Shoah , The Pianist,  etc. All of these movies places us there during the event with the Jews that are affected and sadly, have a good chance to meet a dark fate. With this movie, I was particularly interested in another story from another angle not just surrounding the Jews affected but also how it affects their business and how they could contribute to helping others. Even though the movie is not as emotionally impactful due its  abrupt tonal shifts and Niki Caro, the director, approaches the material safely, it is nevertheless, a mild-mannered film on how this material is handled and it is a solid product. Dr. Jan Żabiński (Johan Heldenbergh), the director of the Warsaw Zoo, and his wife, Antonina (Jessica Cha

The Fate of the Furious (2017), PG-13, ★★1/2

Ok. We are at number eight and believe it or not, not counting the Clone Wars , it is equivalent to the number of Star Wars movies we have. That's unbelievable. However, nobody expected the franchise to go that far. Let's take Fast Five , easily the best movie of the franchise, out of the equation. Would the franchise keep going? Most likely not. It is that movie that morphed into a franchise because of the characters, the chemistry amongst family, the action sequences and last but least, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. But, unfortunately, the loss of Paul Walker triggered a halt in the franchise but lovingly closed up his character's chapter. So, with this new movie, this opens up a new trilogy (oh my!), according to Vin Diesel, and if this is the first movie to open up a new trilogy, this movie again has cool stunt work and action sequences, however, the dark story that was supposed to trigger some realism into its silliness gets the movie to slow down and go astr

Going In Style (2017), PG-13, ★★1/2

Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin have been numerous movies in numerous genres from the past decades and they are legends that can make a movie more interesting and exciting. Now, combining the professionalism and entertainment from all three actors elevates my interest because I am such a big fan of these three actors and is almost a throwback to their early 70s or 80s work. This is 2017 and we do not get as many heist movies as we did back in the day. But, what I do appreciate as to how they handle the source material and develop the characters' problems into a sensible movie. Now, did I enjoy it? Yeah, about most of it. But, would I recommend it? I'd say wait for it to be on digital, blu-ray or DVD to rent to basically enjoy.  Joe, Willie and Al (Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin) are long-time friends and are the stage of their life that they should either be on the verge of retirement with great benefits or retiring with great benefits, enj

The Most Anticipated Movies of Summer 2017

Here we go, we're almost at that time: the Summer Movie Season of 2017. Now, I have to say that I hope (crossing my fingers) that this summer movie season is better than last year's because there were not many good blockbuster or popcorn movies that were offered to me or the audience and were met with disappointing results. However, it was easier than usual to come up with the batch of movies that I am excited for but it was a little harder to rank. The only great and exciting fact is that there are a lot of superhero movies but also a lot of movies from good directors such as Matt Reeves, Christopher Nolan, Edgar Wright, Ridley Scott that will be put on the table for this summer. Anyway, let's get started. In recent years, usually, my most anticipated movie comes out in May. It is not going to happen this year, but it does come close. 10. Despicable Me 3 (Jun. 30) I adored the first movie and I sort of liked its sequel. So, if they diminish the use of the Minio

Ghost in the Shell (2017), PG-13, ★★1/2

For starters, I don't watch as much anime because sometimes either it is not advertised properly or the material does not hook me as much but I have seen some fantastic anime films such as Spirited Away , Princess Mononoke and  The Wind Rises . I did not watch the original anime film to prepare for this movie so I don't want to be criticized too heavily because I did not have the same connection or there are things I stepped over that I was confused about. The movie is unlike the original Blade Runner , visually spectacular but the narrative is not straight forward or confusing. But the difference is that I watch Blade Runner , both the original and final cuts, multiple times to fully understand the story and emotional depth and view the fantastic effects. With this movie, I gaze and scan at the visual artistry and also think that Scarlett Johansson was awesome, the pacing is slow and the narrative was flat in the end. However, it is unfavorably straight forward compared to

The Boss Baby (2017), PG, ★★

I am not a fan of "baby talking" movies or "baby" comedies except Three Men and a Baby, Look Who's Talking and Raising Arizona . The Baby Geniuses  movies (I think the sequel is the worst movie ever made.), Baby's Day Out, The Back-Up Plan ,  What to Expect What You're Expecting , She's Having a Baby, etc. is like a nightmare list. Maybe, the penultimate film on the list was not one of the worst movies but it was disappointing because there was some potential. Now, we have another baby movie now in the animated world and I am sorry say that even though Dreamworks Animation tries so hard to make a very good, it felt like I was participating in a focus group watching a sketch for some merchandise for a baby brand with a couple of laughs than watching a movie with a "story". Seven-year-old Tim Templeton (voiced by Miles Bakshi) has been the sole child of his parents, Ted and Janice (voiced by Jimmy Kimmel and Lisa Kudrow), who play with h
