The 88th Academy Award Winners

The Oscars was good at best. Chris Rock delivered a very good monologue, both, hilarious and worthy of talking about regarding its lack of diversity in both Hollywood and the Academy. I thought he kept the monologue real balanced until the joke and issue stretched it too far throughout the show. I kept saying, "We get it. Let's move on." (I'll admit: The segment in which they put the African-American actors in the movies like The Danish Girl and The Martian was funny.) But, there were some surprises (Stallone not winning and Ex Machina  getting Visual Effects) and delights ( Spotlight winning Best Picture and Leonardo DiCaprio finally winning his first Oscar.) Here are the winners: BEST PICTURE: Spotlight BEST DIRECTOR: Alejandro G. Iñarritu - The Revenant BEST ACTOR: Leonardo DiCaprio - The Revenant BEST ACTRESS: Brie Larson - Room BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Mark Rylance - Bridge of Spies BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Alicia Vikander - The Danish Girl

Gods of Egypt (2016), PG-13, 0 stars

He's thinking, "Great paycheck, terrible movie on my resume." All right. There are bad movies. There are bad movies that are entertaining. And, there is garbage. Guess which category Gods of Egypt  falls in? That's right. GARBAGE! This is probably one of the most laughably bad movies I've seen in a long time. And, sword-and-sorcery movies are not my cup of tea but when done real well, they turn into: Raiders of the Lost Ark  or maybe, Spartacus . But, this movie was the epitome of a nail being stepped on and it is painful when you start jumping up and down. I'm not going to waste my time writing a regular review because this movie is hilariously inept in its stupidity and the result is like light being absent during the filmmaking of this movie. We cannot see the talent involved or the specialty behind the scenes. It's a cash-grab. It's basically Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldeau), lord of the air, trying to reclaim the crown from his god-uncle, Set

My Top 10 Oscar-Winning Best Picture Movies

The Oscars are tomorrow and again, the Best Picture category is surprisingly unpredictable as it is between 3 movies. However, sometimes or maybe nearly half the time, the Academy predicts the wrong movie to get Best Picture (*cough* Shakespeare in Love *cough* Saving Private Ryan *cough* for Best Picture *cough*). So, I'd put together a list of my 10 favorite Best Picture winners that establish themselves, in my opinion, as the ones that deserve the trophy. None of the movies that won Best Picture from the 2010s so far are on the list but if I were to choose one honorable mention, I'd pick 12 Years A Slave . Honorable Mentions: The Silence of the Lambs Million Dollar Baby Rain Man Midnight Cowboy Titanic On the Waterfront 10. The Sound of Music 9. Unforgiven 8. No Country for Old Men 7. The Departed 6. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 5. Amadeus 4. Schindler's List 3. The Godfather Part II 2. Braveheart 1. The Godfathe

The 88th Academy Awards Predictions

Who and what will win? Holy moly! This has been a crazy awards season as different guilds awards have picked different movies to win Best Picture. So, it's a 3-movie race and we'll get to which will be in contention for Best Picture. Even, Best Supporting Actress was crazy as two people were getting awards. I mean, it's going to be an interesting telecast as Chris Rock is hosting because of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. Nobody is safe in the Dolby Theatre. Here are my predictions for the top categories. I will announce my picks on a YouTube video tomorrow. Link:  Caro the Movie Critic: 2016 Oscar Predictions (ALL CATEGORIES) BEST PICTURE The Big Short Bridge of Spies Brooklyn Mad Max: Fury Road The Martian The Revenant Room Spotlight Will win: The Revenant Should win: Spotlight Dark Horse: The Big Short It is going to be The Revenant by a nose over Spotlight and The Big Short. I would prefer Spotlight because of its story and structure (I would'

How To Be Single (2016), R, ★★1/2

Dakota Johnson and Rebel Wilson. This movie is an interesting insight and commentary as how women can have a relationship with men from a single woman's point of view because most of the time we single men's point of view as to how they can get a woman to be in their own relationship. Based on the trailers, I was very worried because I did not laugh once when I was shown this teaser. It's seemingly a Valentine's chick-flick dedicated to women who have no choice but to get their own counterparts to have a relationship with. Even though this movie is a lot better than the Sex and the City movies and has a similar plot line, this movie has two sides of the coin as there is chemistry between the two main characters but the plot is fairly predictable and scattershot as to why some are the characters are not fully developed. Alice (Dakota Johnson) is a New York paralegal who had recently dumped his boyfriend, Josh (Nicolas Braun). She has moved in with her sister, Meg (

The Witch (2016), R, ★★★

What's out there? Who goes there? What's going on inside the woods? Many things in reality. Deer, bugs, snakes, a hunter, etc. But, in the horror genre, many ordinary things in extraordinary circumstances can occur to various characters with not much intellectual thought or expertise in wildlife. However, in history, Puritans grouped together as one religious family rather than a group of isolated individuals to practice their religion. A disagreement of beliefs can cause a person to be an outcast from other friends and with his/her family. This latest horror film provokes more thought than scares that produces a subtle and scarier environment. Nevertheless, it is a film of commitment and solid craftsmanship from a rookie director, Robert Eggers. He has talent. William (Ralph Ineson), the patriarch of a Puritan family, has been isolated due to a religious disagreement and calling the people around him "false Christians". He and his wife, Katherine (Kate Dickie)

Zoolander 2 (2016), PG-13, ★

They are being beautiful and thrilling simultaneously.  Zoolander , its predecessor, was a movie that I thought had one hilarious moment (the gas station scene) and some good laughs but ultimately was a decent movie one can watch on cable. There has been a lot of inspired comedic antics from Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell and Owen Wilson that rips off the fashion industry in terms of superficiality, media and runway appearances. But, somehow, director Ben Stiller has the celebrities in hand as to ripping off, again, the fashion industry a lot more than throwing in the usual laughter. The movie is missing laughs from a comedy that made me squirm and almost doze off than actually persuading me to laugh.  The movie starts out with a recap of what is going on with the characters. Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) was once the hottest male model until his charity place, The Derek Zoolander for Kids Who Do Not Read Good and What They Want to Learn Even More Things, collapses since the latter w

Deadpool (2016), R, ★★★1/2

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool. I'm not a big comic book geek or nerd but I have heard of this next comic-book character I have heard about. But, I have to applaud both 20th Century Fox (I might forgive y'all for Fantastic Four ) and Marvel on their marketing and advertising campaigns. Inserting Deadpool into scene-chewing ads reciting puns and some salty comments and their strategy was hilariously ingenious. It made me excited for the movie because of their strategy and it grew on me. The only worry was 20th Century Fox's last superhero outing. This movie will encourage fans to go to the theaters again because of the salty humor and bloody action meshed into a nearly-golden and very fun superhero movie. Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is a mercenary for hire living in New York City, taking a job by stopping a pizza delivery boy to stop stalking a girl by threatening him. He is called a hero, but he responds to the girl that he is not. Wade goes to a bar where his best friend,

The Top 6 Super Bowl Ads of 2016 (Super Bowl 50)

The following commercials are... The game was kind of a yawner in the middle portion but it got a bit interesting in its bookends. (Hey, I'm happy for the Denver Broncos and Peyton Manning winning the Super Bowl.) However, the commercials, overall, were ok this year ranging a few great ones to some commercials that were bland and not as creative as I would have hoped or their consumer insights were incorrect. But, there were about 8 ads gearing for the top 6 and that's a pretty low number in my opinion. I added a consolation number because this was a prime Super Bowl and it's 2016 and I said to myself, "Let's just add one more."But, here are my favorite Super Bowl ads of 2016: 6. Amazon Echo This was a lot funnier than I expected it to be. For some reason, this whole commercial works because of a head-to-head matchup with Alec Baldwin and Dan Marino. This ad scores a winning touchdown. 5. Honda It seems that talking heads were a big theme this

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016), PG-13, ★★

Yum...flesh! Ummm...for starters, this has got to be one of the weirdest movies I have ever seen or one of the weirdest projects ever conceived. The concept for twisting the beloved Jane Austen tale into a romantic zombie flick is nearly difficult to achieve. A lot of studios are reaching that demographic/audience of loving the zombie-fest and gore that they consider being delighted to watch. It's a costume-filled Walking Dead  movie. So, as the main characters join forces to stop the zombie apocalypse, we are in for the ride. It's a good idea of for a fan-made YouTube video but not for a movie in theatrical release. Colonel Darcy (Sam Riley) travels to a wealthy family's home for a zombie emergency. He arrives at the home and uncorks a vial, releasing a particular set of flies detecting the undead. The flies land on the house's patriarch and gets his throat slashed. It frightens one of the girls upstairs and she retreats. But, she is discovered to become one of t

Hail, Caesar! (2016), PG-13, ★★1/2

George Clooney is kidnapped. The Coen brothers have made one fantastic movie after another according to their resume but every time they make and write a film with their detailed and supreme imagination, their creativity blossoms into a foray of artistic and quirky mannerisms that the actors apply to to form the best movie they can make possible. My personal favorite movie from them is Fargo , which in my mind, is as perfect it can get. There are numerous original and exceedingly well-made films such as No Country For Old Men , Raising Arizona , The Big Lebowski, Inside Llewyn Davis , O Brother, Where Art Thou? , etc. However, with their newest and freshest idea, they have numerous attempts of quirkiness that seem to excel but somehow are not sewn on as tightly as it should be. Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) is a fixer for a movie studio called Capitol Pictures, keeping the actors' reputations safe. For example, he had to slap an actress to give her an alibi. He watches a rough c
