Game Night (2018), R, ★★★1/2

We got a gem and a let's say a couple of karats on a ring with a couple of comedies last year with The Big Sick  and Girls Trip  respectively. There has not been much creative success with many comedies as filmmakers and writers go for the same joke or push the joke a little too far. I was not as crazy about Girls Trip  as much a lot of people but I bought the friendship between the four and Tiffany Haddish's comedic performance bumped it up a notch. But, the raunchy humor was a bit too filthy at certain points for my taste. However, I was craving for a comedy that can make me laugh almost throughout and finally, we got one and as far as I'm concerned, this may be one of the few funnier comedies in recent years. Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams) formed a relationship and got married after meeting each other at a competitive game night. However, in the present day, they are having problems conceiving a child, which may attribute to Max being stressed. Annie

Annihilation (2018), R, ★★★1/2

Alex Garland is one of those people under-the-radar with mostly his writing abilities during his collaboration with fellow director Danny Boyle with 28 Days Later and Sunshine . However, he made quite an impact with his excellent 2015 movie, Ex Machina,  a movie that challenged you in how the future could be impacted surrounding a Turing test between a male and a female, for that instance, a robot. Now, with this movie, Garland has created a movie that is even more challenging and more intellectual than most movies released. I had to ponder whether if the story had earned the right to become a greater product than a greater concept and the answer is that it does not earn it completely in spite of its high concept. The movie has Lena (Natalie Portman), a cellular biologist and former U.S. army soldier, discovering that her husband, Kane (Oscar Isaac), missing for a while but *minor spoiler* returns after a year. However, on the way to the hospital because Kane suffering some sort o

The Best Sci-Fi Female Movie Characters

In honor of director Alex Garland's new movie, Annihilation , I decided to post a special and fun article surrounding the best or memorable female movie characters in science fiction, regarding the amount of action, comedy, drama, romance, etc. It is Annihilation is highlighting five female characters going on a mission to find out what happened to the biologist's husband and also the key to what happened beyond that mysterious border. Plus, I love the science fiction genre so when researching for female characters in sci-fi movies, there were more than I imagined and it was tough to limit the number of characters onto this list. So, I posted 15-20 via video clips. There will be debate whether or not that a few of these movies on the list are actually science fiction movies but if you add enough sci-fi (ex: dystopia) to let's just say an action or drama, then I believe it is credited as a sci-fi film. So, here they are, we'll start with the obvious memorable three

Black Panther (2018), PG-13, ★★★★

Last year, we had Wonder Woman as an important and cultural event as we finally got a very good movie with a female role in the spotlight. I thought it was 2/3rds of a great movie but they dropped the ball while going into autopilot with the overblown special effects and clunky dialogue between immortals. However, we have another important and cultural event that presents a prominent black superhero...but, it's not the first as we had Blade and Hancock in the past. I thought the former is a fun movie with its quirky lines and violence and the latter was ok. But, this time Marvel presents a mostly African-American cast in a fictional African world with advanced technology and splendor with some of the same problems that America is facing, both politically and personally within the country, having to do with the throne. In the hands of director Ryan Coogler, the movie has the right balance of action and humor to produce a home run in the MCU. This is a terrific movie. After the

The 15:17 to Paris (2018), PG-13, ★1/2

I was conflicted after experiencing this movie because there were two flip sides of the coin. One, I respect the heroes in these events for what they accomplished as they stopped the 2015 Thalys train attack from being an unfortunate terrorist attack. We needed an inspiring story at times like these where attacks, such as the tragic news unfolding in Florida, where there is good in people who can make a difference. That being said, the movie about that event is very slow-burning that you become impatient as to why this movie was being structured the way it was presented to the audience. It felt like they had no idea what to do to fill in the remaining running time of the movie besides the main event. The soldiers (Spencer Stone, Anthony Sadler and Alek Skarlatos) are portraying themselves in this movie. The movie begins with Spencer and Alek attending a Christian private school as the movie builds up their friendship as they share common interests like guns and are often sent to t

Peter Rabbit (2018), PG, ★★★

I'm not entirely familiar with Beatrix Potter's characters of rabbit figures but after watching Paddington 2, I'm hoping that filmmakers carry on that momentum of lovable animalistic characters. I did not expect to adore that sequel. I digress, so watching the trailer of Peter Rabbit , it looked cute but I was worried to be too childish and not in my "zip code" or turn into an awful movie like last year's putrid The Emoji Movie . However, despite all of the formulaic crass humor that crosses into territory of childish behavior, I had a fun time with this movie because of its charm and non-formulaic approach to its resolution. Peter Rabbit (voiced by James Corden) is a mischievous rabbit out of a family of rambunctious sorts that steals vegetables out of Mr. McGregor's (Sam Neill) garden. Along with Peter, his cousin, Benjamin Bunny (voiced by Colin Moody) and his triple sisters, Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-Tail (voiced by Margot Robbie, Elizabeth Debicki

The Cloverfield Paradox (2018), Unrated, ★★

This was a great business deal for Paramount to let this movie be sent off to Netflix and be advertised. However, is Netflix a dumping ground for movies to be advertised? I don't know. People say that Netflix movies are basically there to be criticized or to be watched but not for repeated viewings. Look, I think Okja and Mudbound  are good movies so it's not totally a wasteland. Why would you think that Martin Scorsese is making a movie that is set to debut on Netflix in 2019 with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino called The Irishman ?   (I can't wait for that one.) But, after the Super Bowl, the movie was dropped because it was advertised during the Super Bowl and fans were anticipating it. I did not watch it immediately, however, I watched it and I have to admit that I was disappointed because of its average narrative and also the setting in which is centered which I will not spoil. In 2028, Earth's natural resources are severely depleted as they are suffering a glob

Winchester (2018), PG-13, ★

Umm....I respect Dame Helen Mirren because of her work over the years, however, I have no idea why she was in this movie. Look, I want to be honest I have no set-up or intro for this review because I barely was awake throughout the movie. This movie is like a professor teaching us what is going on in each frame but his monotonic voice seems to get me to lull to sleep. Along with Fifty Shades Freed , I cannot imagine a terrible weekend of movies filled with boredom. In San Francisco, drug-addicted psychologist Dr. Eric Price (Jason Clarke) is approached by a man from the Winchester mansion representing the widow, Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren), who is very disturbed and is seeking out Eric's help in treating her. Henry is met by Marian (Sarah Snook) and her son, Henry (Finn Scicluna-O'Prey) and Marian urges Eric to not drink because her husband drunk himself to death. While hashing out memories of his dead wife by looking at the bullet, "Together Forever" and tak

Fifty Shades Freed (2018), R, ★

Praise the Lord. It's over! Why is the series a phenomenon in the realms of the novelistic world? It is escapist entertainment for the target audience. Ok...obviously, I was not going in with much hope due to the fact that the first movie was terrible but with some shots of gorgeous cinematography, the second movie was laughably atrocious. Now, last year, the filmmakers and writers capped an underrated trilogy, the rebooted Planet of the Apes  trilogy with War, which was a brilliant end. Here, we have a polar opposite end in which you can debate which was the better pile of trash, the second movie or the finale of this trilogy. Yeah, the filmmakers and writers capped off an awful trilogy in such a brilliant fashion: it's a total mess. It is no secret that in the end of the second movie, Christian proposes to Anastasia. It seems that we need to get the whole story from Luis from Ant-Man to tell the whole recap of both Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker , at least,

The Top 5 Super Bowl Ads of 2018 (Super Bowl LII)

Wow! What a great game! Favored as the underdogs, the Philadelphia Eagles pulled off the victory against the Patriots 41-33 and it was a thriller. I was thinking that it may be deja vu as the Eagles were behind a point as it was reminiscent of the Falcons letting go of a 25-point lead last year against the Patriots. But, no, the Eagles did what was necessary. What was better this year than last year were the commercials in my opinion as there were some funny ones because the ones regarding the political messages did not have a great execution (e.g. the T-Mobile ad, which was my least favorite ad last night.) And, this list was tough to make a list for as the others were my honorable mentions but I think I chose the right five. However, there are a lot of honorable mentions. So, here they are. 5. Amazon Imagine if Alexa lost her voice. Well, one thought is substitute the voice for celebrities' voices, however, it could be a disaster. The ones that made me lose it was Rebel

12 Strong (2018), R, ★★★

9/11 is an unfortunate tragedy that sunk Americans' hearts across the country. We did not give up as a nation to not solely rebuild New York, but to rebuild the country and trying to get the enemies to pay for their doing. We had the underrated Michael Bay movie, 13 Hours , where despite of the prolonged fighting sequence at the base, it was well-acted and well-told. Now, we have another de-classified true story about another group of soldiers defying the odds. I believe that this a more well-told and well-crafted movie than 13 Hours  for its taut action sequences and chemistry between the characters despite some bad moments of dialogue. Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth) along with his wife, Jean (Elsa Pataky) and daughter, Maddy (Marie Wagenmen) sees footage of 9/11 when the hijacked planes have crashed into the World Trade Center Towers. Because of his retirement papers being filed, Nelson has a tough time with Lt. Colonel Max Bowers (Rob Riggle) to be on a team to go to Afghan
