White Bird in a Blizzard (2014), R, ★★

Shiloh Fernandez and Shailene Woodley. I have seen too many movies where an older woman is trying to be sexy in front of younger ones because her relationship with her husband is uneventful and boring. There are a few more movies coming out with this sort of premise, one next year. Ugh! Anyway, it is a little movie that could about the disappearance of a mother that sometimes seduce younger people for pleasure. And, this movie regarding a dismissive housewife's sexual awakening takes some elements and makes it so incoherent that it looks a kid was shaking the snow globe that you are dizzy in the end. The story weaves back-and-forth with flashbacks and the present day with Eve's (Eva Green) past life and what's going on in the movie. What we witness in the flashbacks is Eve being a sexually charged independent that somehow lost her way after she married her husband, Brock (Christopher Meloni). In the present day, we witness Kat (Shailene Woodley) exploring her blossomi

Happy Halloween!

Well, Halloween is here and it's time for everyone to gather around in their funny, scary or hot costumes that will delight, surprise or scare the heck out of you! Hope everybody has fun trick or treating and beware of the horror in the streets! Hahaha! Seriously, though, be careful. Happy Halloween, everybody!

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (2014), PG, ★★★

The whole family astonished and horrified by something. Have you ever had a bad day? Better question, have you ever had the worst day of your life? People tend to over exaggerate "the worst day of their lives" by something or a series of events impacting "a domino effect" on bad luck. Fortune does not favor the brave for some unlucky people. However, individuals can redeem themselves from their misfortunes by substituting a great hobby, event, or gathering to step away from the boundaries of nightmarish memories. I was not looking forward to this movie, but, however, this family feature delighted me despite mostly slapstick and some nasty pitfalls of the day. Alexander Cooper (Ed Oxenbould) is having a very bad day, hence, the title. He takes us back a day earlier when he is invited to Philip Larker's (Lincoln Melcher) birthday party on the next day. But, his problem is that his birthday is on the same day. The series of unfortunate events starts when Alex

Horns (2014), R, ★★★

Daniel Radcliffe as Ignatius with "horns". Do you want to have a good time with a new Halloween film? Well, this movie has Daniel Radcliffe. No, it's not another Harry Potter film. But, I wonder what it was like during that meeting when someone pitched the idea to star Radcliffe with horns on his head but the filmmakers and writers have to a complex idea as to why he has two protrusions on his head. It is a very disturbing reason why, but I'm glad that the movie is as complex as I thought. Ignatius Perrish (Daniel Radcliffe) is an outsider according to the townspeople. But he did not care whether or not he is different. All that matters is that he is in love with Merrin Williams (Juno Temple). Ig promises to Merrin to be the love of her life as they, in a corny scene, are beneath a tree kissing. Unfortunately, bad news arises as he wakes up lying down on the floor with a bottle of vodka and many angry protesters outside of his house are condemning him to hell as

John Wick (2014), R, ★★★

Keanu Reeves as John Wick.  Where has Keanu Reeves been this past decade? The last big movie he did that I know that was actually good was Something's Gotta Give in 2003 , but he had a supporting role. As a lead in a movie that was good was, well, I liked it, The Matrix Reloaded  in the same year. Revolutions was a dud. I think this past decade he had to reflect on what he was doing with his career in terms of what kind of roles there are in Hollywood. Mainly, he has picked independent projects or spent some time going over what he needed to do to resurrect his career. And, I think this movie is a good start to resurrect Reeves as a lead action star that we know in the '90s. John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is an ex-hitman, who has lost his wife, Helen (Bridget Moynahan) to cancer, and receives a posthumous gift from her and it's a little beagle named Daisy because of the flower on her collar. He also receives condolences on the day of the funeral from the veteran hit man, Ma

Fury (2014), R, ★★★1/2

The crew of the tank called, well, "Fury". There's one thing and one thing that they will do: kill Nazis. Wait a minute, isn't that premise from Inglourious Basterds ? Well, ok, but this time this movie is set during World War II when real events are occurring and war is definitely hell. Don't get me wrong, but Inglourious Basterds is a hell of an entertaining war film by Quentin Tarantino also starring Brad Pitt. This movie, however, depicts the horrors of war that all of the soldiers go through to maneuver and set up their strategy and tactics supported by strong performances by the cast. The setting is in April, 1945 near the end of World War II when the Allies are entering Germany. The Nazis are so desperate to win the war that they want to recruit women and children as soldiers. The only positive aspect in Germany's side despite that they are over empowered, they beat the Americans in tank battles. There are not many left on the Americans' side.

Men, Women & Children (2014), R, ★

Rosemarie Dewitt and Adam Sandler in bed maybe checking someone's Facebook. The Internet. It is almost one of the greatest inventions supporting also a few of the greatest inventions such as the computer and the IPod/IPhone/IPad. It's a source that can guide you to research information about certain things about subjects that you question or have a hard time figure out. I don't imply the latter by cheating to get something done. However, the Internet is sort of a con because it interferes the relationship between two people or more. When certain people who care are about you are worried, they will not give you the benefit of the doubt and will search what is going on. Sometimes, it will help and sometimes, they will invade your privacy. This movie is an intriguing premise on paper, but what is left on-screen is basically the premise, not a story. Don Truby (Adam Sandler) is a father who tries to access pornography on his son's computer because his own computer wil

The Judge (2014), R, ★★1/2

Robert Downey Jr. ready for Robert Duvall's case. Most of the movies I have recently seen seem to really center on a straining relationship or many straining relationships. But, recently, the movie does not seem to focus on the story nor the characters but the events that revolve around that seem ridiculous or silly. The family drama has to unfold into a worthy catharsis between father or son otherwise the movie will become utterly corny and will turn into a sentimental farce. Crossing the family drama with a courtroom drama, there are one too many backstories to make it into multiple films that it gets out of hand and does not produce a worthy effort and turns into a nostalgic cable film. Hank Palmer (Robert Downey Jr.) is a Chicago defense attorney and he is best at what he does. In a solid opening where a prosecuting attorney, Mike Kattan (David Krumholtz), questions his motives and why he defends guilty people while they are in the courthouse bathroom, Hank replies that g

Dracula Untold (2014), PG-13, ★

Luke Evans as Vlad or Dracula. I am not going to beat around the bush, this movie is another wasted effort of trying to make a reliable Dracula film. The movie starts off with a battle in the early 15th century where the Turkish Sultan invades Transylvania to defeat an army of 1,000 men. As the Turkish's soldiers attack and try to ambush the kingdom, Vlad the Impaler (Luke Evans) slaughter a Turk one by one and the world will recognize him as Dracula. Basically, after all of the fluff regarding the fighting and the talk about the creature, Vlad returns to Broken Tooth to seek the creature he saw earlier in the film and The Master Vampire (Charles Dance) presents himself. He is desperate to fight against the creature and the vampire and sinks his teeth on his wrist and pours the blood for Vlad to drink and Vlad collapses onto the rocks. And, what do you think will happen? Vlad intensifies his thirst for blood and walks around with a dark cloak on his body in the woods trying

This is Where I Leave You (2014), R, ★1/2

All of the family grounded for a week. Really? How does it look when family members who do not see each other for a while just become awkward in a delicate situation? There is always an isolated by-standard in a family that could not pertain his or her feelings in front of a loved one and somehow becomes silent for the remainder of his or her visit. But in this dramedy, it seems that when conflicting situations seems to go worse as someone's father passes away, all of the family reunites. It has a funny premise when watching the trailer, but the film does not have any sharp clarity as how thin the characters are written, especially the female characters and the jokes are more misses than hits. Judd Altman (Jason Bateman) works a popular radio station and after work, he gets a cake for Quinn's (Abigail Spencer) birthday, his wife. But, unfortunately, he comes home to find his wife having sex with the host at the popular radio station, Wade Beaufort (Dax Shepard). He asks h

Annabelle (2014), R, ★★

That's not her baby, that's a doll! I personally think dolls are overrated, but, they sell. Sometimes, dolls look terrifying and some look adorable from little girls' eyes. I have noticed in some movies that dolls are the center of horror films just for fun or just for a gore-fest that seems unnecessary. However, this movie is relevant because it takes place before the events of  The Conjuring , a very good horror flick from last year. Even though there are scary moments in between, it uses cheap jolts to scare the pants off us and it results as a disappointedly clichéd memento in our minds. John and Mia Gordon (Ward Horton and Annabelle Wallis) are a couple in 1970 who are expecting to their first child. John is uneasy about having their first child and not being ready for it when he expresses his feelings to his neighbors. Mia is upset at his attitude and to make up for it, John buys her a doll that she has been looking for constantly and she adores it and puts it w

Gone Girl (2014), R, ★★★★

Oh no! Ben Affleck may be his wife's killer.  It's strange that in Hollywood, it is always the husband that may be the main suspect behind a wife's death. The Fugitive , a paradigm for films like this, where Harrison Ford's character is the main suspect behind the death of his wife but he has to find out the truth. But, there are two different angles between these films. The Fugitive revolves around Dr. Richard Kimble and also Sam Gerard played by Tommy Lee Jones and it's a cat-and-mouse game to see what the real truth is. This movie does play at that angle but also we look at it from the personal side such as his marriage and the media's side. It's crazy in today's world. The movie explores in different territories and angles that it is intriguing and it's 2-and-a-half hour length zips by because we are entranced by this mystery. Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) is a writer who goes to a bar who co-owns with his sister, Margo (Carrie Coon). It's t

Left Behind (2014), PG-13, 0 stars

Nicolas Cage trapped in yet another disaster movie. Post-apocalyptic nightmares. Well, about every year a studio wants to create a film full of special effects and scenes of spectacular shots of fire blazing and debris flying in the air that makes you awestruck. How many films do you think are worth viewing repeatedly? Recently, not many. And, the streak continues with this film adaptation of another film adaptation of a book that results into one of the goofiest disaster flicks I have ever seen. Cameron "Buck" Williams (Chad Michael Murray) is this hunky reporter who gets on board on a plane. He's not really a developed character. The story shifts to Rayford Steele (Nicolas Cage), as a father and a pilot who gets called to work when Chloe (Cassi Thomson), his daughter, has come home for his birthday party. She also meets Buck who is also going on the plane and then all of a sudden, up in the air, the Rapture occurs. The Rapture is an event where all of Christ'

The Skeleton Twins (2014), R, ★★★1/2

Bill Hader depressed while Kristen Wiig drives. Depression can really be relevant to any particular element of your life that causes you to drive into the deepest pit of your inner sanctum. It can force you to do anything that can cause you to nearly die or completely die and affect everybody around you. It is always suitable and helpful to have a relative be near you when you are struggling with a depression, like a sibling. And, sometimes, the sibling or relative that helps you may be in trouble and that causes the depressed one to overcome one's habits and redeem himself or herself to perform a good deed. Plus, the good deed may benefit your outcome of your life and change it. This film really captures the sibling bonding between brother and sister in a quiet but almost powerful film. Maggie and Milo (Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader) are brothers and sisters who are having trouble with their lives. Milo is blasting music in his apartment and leaves a note when he attempts suic
