A Tribute To Wes Craven: My Favorite Wes Craven Movies

Wes Craven: One of the masters of horror.
I will be blunt and confess that horror movies are not my forte but very few filmmakers know how to master the suspense, the blood and scares real well. One of the directors is Wes Craven. He died yesterday at the age of 75 and he will be remembered one of the best and most artistic horror directors of all-time. He knew how to twist a story and turn into a fun and original movie or series of movies that teenagers can host a marathon on Halloween. He was known as the writer and director of slasher films and not just to have cheap thrills...but to make newer cheap thrills. I will post some of my favorite films' clips of his on here. May he rest in peace.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

This is the movie that catapulted an iconic horror figure named Freddy Krueger and he had the time to haunt your dreams or give you nightmares. Eventually, you have to wake up or die. However, it is a movie that will still set you up an inception of marathons that you and your friends will like to hang out and be scared with your popcorn in one hand and another friend's hand being gripped firmly for a while.

The Last House on the Left

Oh, yes. I believe this is his feature debut film as a director and we knew that there is a filmmaker being born when we witness the horrors of girls getting tortured and the brutal violence between certain characters. It is a haunting and disturbing film to watch and tough film to endure but it will be worth it in the end.

The People Under the Stairs

I am mixed on this movie but this is so campy and fun that you could not resist the admirable effort that he put into trying to spin off some sort of an "Evil Dead" parody movie.

Scream

Ah, yes, we have another iconic horror figure called Ghostface that scares stupid teenagers into their fates. But, what is so refreshing and scary about this movie is that the teenagers know the cliches from other scary movies but fall into the trip of their senseless, dumb new traps that eventually will lurk Ghostface to kill them. This is another fun movie to watch in October.

Red Eye

This is not a horror film per se but an unfortunate, underrated thriller that will get you hooked and realize that you better watch out for the people you are going to sit next to on an airplane. It has some echoes of a horror film but it is the tension between the characters of Cillian Murphy, a great performance from him, and Rachel McAdams that set it off. A short but entertaining B-level thriller.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), PG-13, ★★1/2

We're about halfway through the Harry Potter franchise and this is the turning point in which I found the material to be darker and more mature when the storyline surrounding Lord Voldemort grows. And, also we see another new and fresh direction as David Yates comes into the spotlight to finish off the franchise with the last four movies. I remember watching the trailer in the theaters and I was excited for this movie as it was mostly action-packed. The bottom line is despite the camaraderie between the young Hogwarts characters and a real-good action sequence in the climax, it is a choppily edited and more grounded movie that does not provoke much magic or memorable scenery. Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is enduring a hot summer and Dudley (Harry Melling) provokes him by making fun of the fact that Harry is haunted by Cedric's death from The Goblet of Fire and also his mom's death. As a storm approaches, demeanors come into the tunnel sucking Dudley's so...

Non-Stop (2014), PG-13, 3 stars

The passengers think Bill Marks (Liam Neeson) is a terrorist. Airports and airplanes. The lines. The crowds. The delays. Everything that Bill Marks (Liam Neeson) hates about flying. When it comes to airports, I have to go through the procedure with taking your carry-on baggage and luggage on the flight. Then, I go through security which I have to admit is not as bad, just follow the rules and guidelines. After security, what do you do? If you are two or three hours early, you have time to kill: Have something to eat, watch something on your IPad, shop, etc. As you board and get on the plane, anything can happen from turbulence to maybe something unexpected like this movie's situation. This movie is silly and preposterous, but it is a fun movie to watch. The movie opens with Bill Marks tired drinking alcohol and arguing with a supervisor on his cellphone glancing at a photo of his daughter. But, he is trying to get his act together by lighting a cigarette while he is being pus...
