The Most Anticipated Movies of Summer 2018

2018 has been a rather interesting year so far with some good quality of movies coming out at the gate but what is more interesting is the summer movie season as I look at the myriad of movies coming out in the summer, aside from a few, I cannot predict some of the movies I am anticipating that will get their profit back or exceed expectations.

However, when I was looking at the good batch of movies this coming summer, aside from the superhero movies, there is more variety in action, comedy, coming-of-age, drama, sci-fi ranging from high-budget to low-budget movies and that is exciting. There could be a couple of movies that will be under-the-radar for people to overlook. Aside from the few that is most likely to be in the honorable mentions, there are enough movies to look forward to that I cannot wait for. I'm hoping to have this summer to be better than the past few years, it was an improvement last summer as four movies were in my top movies of 2017: Dunkirk, Baby Driver, The Big Sick and War for the Planet of the Apes.

All right, here are my most anticipated movies of summer 2018:

Obviously, even though I considered the summer movie season to be from May to August, I'll include Avengers: Infinity War to kick off the season. It would have been #1 for me.

10. Hereditary (Jun. 8)

Oh my gosh! I completely overlooked this movie while making my design up on top but anyway, because of a run of very good horror movies, this may be a sleeper hit during the summer as a presence is left behind in the house after the matriarch of the household passed away. Supernatural horror/thrillers can be scary as hell but can be the best kind of scary as it is my favorite type of scary movies as filmmakers and writers create a great mood/atmosphere to the story and leave you covering your eyes by the end.

9. Christopher Robin (Aug. 3)

Yeah, yeah, yeah. But, did you have an affinity for a childhood character when you were growing up? Live-action or animated? I think so. Winnie the Pooh is beloved to many people around that evokes a good amount of warmth and cuteness into this movie's story and into our hearts. There is a good flavor of the Steven Spielberg movie, Hook, in here which I do not like. But, I am confident in Marc Forster's direction of this project and Ewan McGregor's and Hayley Atwell's performances along with that adorable character.

8. Ocean's 8 (Jun. 8)

I'm hoping this is not like Ghostbusters. I pray to God it is not going to be like that bad remake. You're going to ask me: why did I put this on the list? It is because I'm a fan of heist films and Ocean's Eleven and Thirteen. Based on the trailer, which I did like, it looks like the same type of style evoking Soderbergh's three Ocean's movies. I think Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett look like a great pair compared to George Clooney and Brad Pitt as a great, comedic pair of thieves. I am a bit apprehensive about a couple of people in that group of female thieves but I have confidence in them.

7. Skyscraper (Jul. 13)

This is probably the cheesiest movie of the bunch but I don't care: This is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in another Die Hard rip-off storyline in which a building is taken by terrorists and his family is taken hostage. I am hoping that this is rated R because I have not seen him in an R-rated action film in a long time. Ok, I don't have great expectations but I am just hoping that this is a good, fun action movie.

6. Ant-Man and the Wasp (Jul. 6)

I think Ant-Man is an underrated superhero film that is very good as Paul Rudd carried the movie well, but, I'm glad that Michael Peña is back as his humorous friend. However, this sequel carries along the storyline that now Evangeline Lilly is the Wasp, as hinted in the after-credits of the first Ant-Man. They team up to go on a mission that has something to do with the past. I am still wondering if Ant-Man is actually in Avengers: Infinity War. I don't know.

5. Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25)

To be quite honest, this is the least amount of excitement I've had towards a Star Wars movie because I do not want to know everything about Han Solo, the character. He had a background in A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back that is quite refreshing and that was enough to like the character. But, now, we have one coming and it does look fun and I don't know if it will live up to the new ones or the original ones. But, let's hope it is not in the levels of the prequels or worse. We're counting on Alden Ehrenreich and director Ron Howard to take this home in 12 parsecs.

4. Sicario: Day of the Soldado (Jun. 29)

I loved Denis Villeneuve's Sicario but I questioned why we needed a sequel to that great movie. Well, it is because the first movie was really about Benicio Del Toro's character. The main reason why I'm excited for this movie is because writer Taylor Sheridan, who also wrote the first movie but also Hell or High Water and Wind River, is back taking us back to War on Drugs in Mexico as both Del Toro and Josh Brolin (man, he's in three movies in three months. Wow!) attempt to incite a war between drug cartels. This looks awesome and terrifying.

3. Deadpool 2 (May 18)

Deadpool, the movie, was awesome and now Ryan Reynolds is back with his sarcastic, meta-humor and charm taking on a mission to defeat Josh Brolin as Cable. What is going to be awesome is that Deadpool is going to be leading a team of mutants called X-Force to protect a young mutant. So, it's Logan crossed with X-Men but bloodier and hopefully, funnier. I thought that this was going to be superhero movie that I was mostly anticipating but there is one more.

2. Incredibles 2 (Jun. 15)

We've been waiting 15 years for a sequel to The Incredibles and we finally got one as this sequel takes place right after the first movie. What is going to be hilarious is that Mr. Incredible becoming Mr. Mom to Jac-Jac, Dash and Violet as Elastigirl goes on her own mission. I think that this is going to be a more personal story because it is devoted to the family more than the action based on the marketing. I can never get tired of Jac-Jac and his antics. But, it's great to see Pixar take its time with the story and see what they come up with in the end.

1. Mission Impossible: Fallout (Jul. 27)

Whether you like it or not, the Mission Impossible series keeps on rolling as the series gets better and better. Tom Cruise has been promoted for this movie but not right the reason that you expect but for his ankle injury as he jumped from one building to another which was painful to see. But, we got a bad-ass trailer from Cruise and company along with new additions Angela Bassett and Henry Cavill, who is either the villain or Cruise's ally, which I'm not sure. Superman being the villain? It can't be. But, the trailer got me so excited as I got sold while watching this trailer during the Super Bowl. Can this possibly be the best movie of the series? We'll see. That'd be amazing if the sixth movie is the best.

2015 Documentaries

I have only seen 6 documentaries this year which also includes Amy and I Am Chris Farley . But, I have to be honest, this has not been a particularly strong year for documentaries except for onethat got me emotionally and mentally as what I examine for when they uncover the truth or some facts from the people involved in these documentaries. But, here are the four I have seen this year: Listen To Me Marlon, Unrated, 4 stars This is the most insightful documentary of the year as we only hear Marlon Brando narrating his life and experiences what he has gone through regarding his family, his private life and his film experiences regarding The Godfather , Apocalypse Now , Last Tango in Paris , etc. It is like Marlon Brando came out of his grave to give us another profoundly moving movie only we hear his voice and scenery and nothing else. The Look of Silence, R, 3.5 stars Joshua Oppenheimer's follow-up documentary is a light-hearted but still-disturbing film regarding a ...

Daddy's Home 2 (2017), PG-13, ★1/2

The first Daddy's Home was surprisingly a financial success as I thought it was not as bad as many people thought. I thought it was a solid cable watch because it had enough laughs for that sort of mixed recommendation. I was not craving for a sequel for this movie because again, comedy sequels have a very bad record, however, the only difference is that it is not too late since the first movie came out a few years ago. But, this sequel is a reminder as to why we do not need a sequel to a hit comedy because this is a pretty much forgettable comedy, especially a holiday comedy...which I hade a guilty pleasure for. This did not work for me. Brad and Dusty (Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg) have become friends after the events of the first film and they set up a co-dad system where their two children, Megan and Dylan, spending time at each father's home. Dusty has re-married to writer Karen (Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio) and he is step-dad to Adrianna, Karen...

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), R, 4 stars

The stockbrokers worshipping Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) like a god. Wall Street. The clients, the adrenaline, the stocks, the money, the power, and the decadence. The former three pertains to the man's job, but the latter three pertains what any stockbroker wants in order to have the freedom to do whatever they want with the client's money. As Mark Hanna (Matthew McConaughey) would say, "The name of the game is: move the money from your client's pocket into your pocket." We basically spend three hours seeing all of these Wall-Street scumbags steal the clients' money into their own pockets and spend it on booze, drugs, women, and other insane things in more insane activities. I have witnessed here is a great movie that I would not watch repetitively. The movie starts with Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) blowing cocaine onto a hooker's butt and he and his brokers throwing a little person onto a board with a dollar sign in the center. It'...
