Sometimes, people are in a situation where it is out of your hands when a superior is having a bad mood and that mood interferes with the employee's experience with the company and his/her boss. It could be an awkward office if the boss is having a bad mood. Even though the plot seemed a bit familiar, sometimes, I was interested in the movie because of the people involved and also I have not seen this type of romantic comedy in a while. If you want to just stream a fun movie, this is the movie that you'll be thinking that you made the right choice to watch.
25-year old Harper (Zoey Deutch) is an assistant to online sports journalist/editor, Kirsten (Lucy Liu) whereas 28-year old Charlie (Glen Powell) is an assistant to venture capitalist, Rick (Glen Powell). They both are going through tough times regarding not having money to pay for food or waiting too long for food. Harper and Charlie meet and Harper is worried that Kirsten will fire her if she does not give her her food so Charlie gives her one of his meals. Charlie meets Harper the next day to reimburse her for the cost of the food and they complain about their bosses not having any time in their personal lives and they need to get laid.
Once Kirsten and Rick get along after their few dates, they get happier and even give Harper and Charlie a lighter load of work and have them improve their dating lives. But, things between Kirsten and Rick get bumpy as Harper and Charlie have to work hard to keep their bosses together by writing apology notes, planning dates, etc. But, there is one thing that will cause their plan to go south if not executed correctly.
The movie was more fun and light than I thought but I had a good time watching this Netflix movie. I was not expecting an Oscar-worthy comedy but a good, well-executed romantic comedy and for that, I recommend it. Plus, the movie had some stakes especially in the second half that I cannot give away that came from left field and I appreciated that it went toward that direction than in the predictable route. Yes, there are cliched moments but there were not enough to add up to a terrible whole movie. Plus, I though the screenplay was written well enough that no offense to Netflix, but this movie would've been good for a studio to release it theatrically since we do not have many of these in theaters.
In addition to the screenplay, the cast is solid. I kind of do not buy them as a couple but Glen Powell and Zoey Deutch were great individually. They radiate great charisma on-screen. And, where has Lucy Liu been in movies? She is great in this and so was Taye Diggs. I like the balance between the fierce, stern quality and deserved break and love in their characters. You can feel it. But, it is the second half that changed my perspective from being ok to being good. It's a light Cyrano De Bergerac that is a pleasant surprise amidst the summer blockbusters.
It is on Netflix and even though it is unrated, I think it is appropriate for teenagers and up because of language, sexual content and brief alcohol use. (It's more of a PG-13 type of movie so it is fine.)
