Philip Seymour Hoffman's death was a very tragic loss in the Hollywood industry and. He was one of the best actors in recent memory giving one strong performance after another. Unfortunately, the drug overdose took his life way too soon. He was 46. It is very difficult for me to pick a favorite performance; therefore, I am going to display my 5 favorite performances from Hoffman.
Capote (2005)
Hoffman truly deserved the Oscar for his committed performance as the memorable American author Truman Capote. He really was Capote from the look and stature of the man to the mannerisms that he display while being in a conversation.
The Master (2012)
Even though Joaquin Phoenix is in the center of the movie, the movie really centers around Phoenix's character and Hoffman's character's, Lancaster Dodd's, relationship. His performance gets the audience attentive right from his entrance into what he is going to say to relax Phoenix and put some thought into our minds in Paul Thomas Anderson's film.
Charlie Wilson's War (2007)
Even though the chemistry between Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks was a bit predictable, Hoffman really stole the movie as the maverick CIA agent trying to help Charlie Wilson to strategize their plan against the Soviets in Afghanistan. This was one of his wackier and more different roles in his filmography. His performance showed that he was truly a more-than-great character-actor.
Boogie Nights (1997)
This was a terrific ensemble piece organized again by director Paul Thomas Anderson in one of his first movies. Hoffman had a small supporting role as a gay boom operator who has a crush on Dirk Diggler played by Mark Wahlberg. His range in this small role was noticeable as he displayed his excitement and vulnerability in the small world of the pornographic industry in the 1970s. Every person in that industry was a celebrity in their own right until the downfall in the 1980s.
Mission Impossible: III
Oh, man! I think Hoffman created the best and most memorable villain in the Mission: Impossible series. He played a cunning and evil arms dealer who threatens to kill Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his wife. The chemistry between Cruise and Hoffman elevates the material in the series into another level during those tense moments. Otherwise, this was a good first movie by J.J. Abrams, thanks to Hoffman's villainous performance.
