2014 Holiday Movie Gift Guide

This is my first time posting my recommendations to give to someone this holiday season and I think I decided to post it because the holiday season is more about giving to people than receiving. Nevertheless, receiving a gift is quite unpredictable and also exciting. Finding the right gift for someone relieves you and makes you even happier than the person receiving it. It takes the weight off your back. I think it was a good idea to post it now because of people excited about the holiday season and also Black Friday is around the corner, so I divided the film categories into sections and I'm going to start off with...

KID VIDs (Movies you want to give to your little sibling, son/daughter, cousin, niece/nephew, etc.)

Frozen

This and the next movie will be the movies that kids would want for Christmas. It came out way last year and I know that many families have gotten the film when it came out, but, hey, there are chances that the prices went down and it's almost a holiday film for one of the biggest and highest grossing Disney films of all time. It is definitely will be a great present not just for your son/daughter, but maybe for the entire family that is filled with memorable characters, great songs, and snow.

The LEGO Movie

"Everything is awesome, everything is cool when you're part of a team..." This whole movie is awesome, full of humor, "business insight", and spoof of other characters from other films. What surprised me and delighted me is how the filmmakers packed in so many jokes not just for the kids, but also for the adults. There's about everything in it for everyone. As I said in my original review, this would 'a business CEO's favorite animated movie". But, kids will definitely have fun with this movie and then go play with their LEGOs right after it is finished.

How To Train Your Dragon 2

A fantastic sequel that soars beyond some gorgeous images of mountains, hills and combat. It is also a bittersweet as it tells when he sees his mother again and also a reunion. However, there are moments that will delight children but that will also scare children and maybe make them cry. Even though this is a great gift, I would have a conversation with them after the movie is over. This is a good sequel no matter what.

BLOCKBUSTER FILMS (Movies that were giant hits in the commercial market that I also liked very much)

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

If you could not afford the film when it first came out, get it soon because I think your daughter or a film fanatic would love to have this latest installment of the Hunger Games series. It is a sequel that has adventurous cinematography, great action and tense suspense with an ending that leaves you wanting more anchored by another great performance by Jennifer Lawrence.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

The latest installment of this X-Men franchise is, in my opinion, the best film of the series as mutants are becoming extinct as war is about to conclude. But, Professor X sends Wolverine to the past to change the future in a race against time so young Professor X and young Magneto can help him change it. It is a film with a storyline that makes sense and concludes it beautifully with a nice scene followed by a good cliffhanger.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Another great installment in the canon of Marvel films that makes Captain America cool. The film is filled with suspense and action and great sequences with some political themes in the story that you will be on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. It is the last film before the next Avengers film coming out in the summer.

Edge of Tomorrow

This is the surprise of the summer that looks like Groundhog Day mixed with Starship Troopers and Aliens that a lot of people would classify as another Tom Cruise vehicle with the same elements of his films. But, it's a different type of vehicle that sets him up as a vulnerable PR soldier trying to figure out something with the help from Emily Blunt. It is a fantastic sci-fi film.

Award Films (Films that came out last year that should be owned in your movie collection)

Captain Phillips

Another great Tom Hanks performance with a villainous performance by Barkhad Abdi that gets you attentive into the true story of how Captain Richard Phillips escaped from the Somali pirates. It is a gripping film.

The Wolf of Wall Street

If you can handle the excess of celebration, hard-core drinking and snorting cocaine, and sex for 3 hours, you can handle this movie. But, it's not just about that: it is about the rise of how stockbrokers do their job the wrong way in the 1980s and 1990s as Jordan Belfort was out of control with more. It is a great film from Martin Scorsese and sublime performances from Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill.

12 Years a Slave

The best picture of 2013. 'nuff said. It is a portrait of slavery that seems so gloomy and realistic that it is unfortunate to witness what all the slaves go through based on a true story from Solomon Northup. I had the same feelings from watching this movie compared to the feeling watching Steven Spielberg's masterpiece, Schindler's List.

OVERLOOKED FILMS (Movies that did not get much viewing when it came out in theatres, but should be looked at.)

Her

It is another brilliant film from Spike Jonze that unfortunately did not get the proper audience viewing it deserved. It is an outlook of how people can view their technology not just as tools but as connections to their lives. Please watch this film.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

A witty comedy-drama that is heavily relied on by both the lovely performance by Ralph Fiennes and colorful camerawork by Wes Anderson. It is sharp on tone and dialogue and vulnerable by sadness from different characters. A movie that you should buy if you're a Wes Anderson fan or not a Wes Anderson fan.

COMING SOON (Films that will come out but will available after this post. LOL.)

22 Jump Street

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Guardians of the Galaxy

Well, that's it for all the film recommendations that I presume that you may go to that special someone during this holiday season.

2015 Documentaries

I have only seen 6 documentaries this year which also includes Amy and I Am Chris Farley . But, I have to be honest, this has not been a particularly strong year for documentaries except for onethat got me emotionally and mentally as what I examine for when they uncover the truth or some facts from the people involved in these documentaries. But, here are the four I have seen this year: Listen To Me Marlon, Unrated, 4 stars This is the most insightful documentary of the year as we only hear Marlon Brando narrating his life and experiences what he has gone through regarding his family, his private life and his film experiences regarding The Godfather , Apocalypse Now , Last Tango in Paris , etc. It is like Marlon Brando came out of his grave to give us another profoundly moving movie only we hear his voice and scenery and nothing else. The Look of Silence, R, 3.5 stars Joshua Oppenheimer's follow-up documentary is a light-hearted but still-disturbing film regarding a ...

Daddy's Home 2 (2017), PG-13, ★1/2

The first Daddy's Home was surprisingly a financial success as I thought it was not as bad as many people thought. I thought it was a solid cable watch because it had enough laughs for that sort of mixed recommendation. I was not craving for a sequel for this movie because again, comedy sequels have a very bad record, however, the only difference is that it is not too late since the first movie came out a few years ago. But, this sequel is a reminder as to why we do not need a sequel to a hit comedy because this is a pretty much forgettable comedy, especially a holiday comedy...which I hade a guilty pleasure for. This did not work for me. Brad and Dusty (Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg) have become friends after the events of the first film and they set up a co-dad system where their two children, Megan and Dylan, spending time at each father's home. Dusty has re-married to writer Karen (Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio) and he is step-dad to Adrianna, Karen...

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), R, 4 stars

The stockbrokers worshipping Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) like a god. Wall Street. The clients, the adrenaline, the stocks, the money, the power, and the decadence. The former three pertains to the man's job, but the latter three pertains what any stockbroker wants in order to have the freedom to do whatever they want with the client's money. As Mark Hanna (Matthew McConaughey) would say, "The name of the game is: move the money from your client's pocket into your pocket." We basically spend three hours seeing all of these Wall-Street scumbags steal the clients' money into their own pockets and spend it on booze, drugs, women, and other insane things in more insane activities. I have witnessed here is a great movie that I would not watch repetitively. The movie starts with Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) blowing cocaine onto a hooker's butt and he and his brokers throwing a little person onto a board with a dollar sign in the center. It'...
