NOTES & THOUGHTS:

-There are 8 movies in the running for Best Picture instead of the maximum 10 movies. If I were to add two movies I would've added: Gone Girl and this is going to be crazy, but, Guardians of the Galaxy because of the box office success and critical praise.

-I've just noticed in the acting categories there are no colored actors nominated and this is the first time it has happened since 1998.

-Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel are tied with the most nominations with 9 each.

-It is rare for a film, The Grand Budapest Hotel, that came out in March to get the most nominations. I did not overlook it when it first came out. I thought it was great.

SURPRISES & SNUBS:

-Not a lot of love for Selma in the top categories and I thought that David Oyelowo was excellent and he was snubbed. But, again, it was a tough year for actors because, now, looking at the category, who do I throw out?

-Also, what about Jake Gyllenhaal from Nightcrawler? He was fantastic.

-Director Bennett Miller was the surprise nomination in that category with Foxcatcher not getting a Best Picture nomination. Weird.

-On the opposite end of spectrum of Selma, American Sniper just snuck in to gain momentum to earn 6 Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor for Bradley Cooper, which his 3rd Oscar nomination in a row.

-Marion Cotillard was nominated for a foreign language film. But, nevertheless, she's a great actress.

-Meryl Streep, 19th Oscar nomination. 'nuff said.

-Alexandre Desplat got a double nomination for Best Score, which I would've given the other one to Atticus Ross & Trent Reznor for Gone Girl.

-Gone Girl should have gotten a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination. It was snubbed.

-Best Visual Effects category is very competitive.

-Some documentaries like Life Itself and The Overnighters were definitely overlooked and I only saw two of the nominated films in that category: Citizenfour and The Last Days in Vietnam, which I recently saw which was a good movie.

-Last, but not least, the one that made me very angry: The LEGO Movie did not get an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature, but the song did. (So, yay.) This was a movie that was bold and a visionary. What's wrong with them? They did not laugh all the way through? It was original. I guess, now, How To Train Your Dragon 2, which is definitely now my choice in that category, will win.

The Oscar season has begun.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), PG-13, ★★1/2

We're about halfway through the Harry Potter franchise and this is the turning point in which I found the material to be darker and more mature when the storyline surrounding Lord Voldemort grows. And, also we see another new and fresh direction as David Yates comes into the spotlight to finish off the franchise with the last four movies. I remember watching the trailer in the theaters and I was excited for this movie as it was mostly action-packed. The bottom line is despite the camaraderie between the young Hogwarts characters and a real-good action sequence in the climax, it is a choppily edited and more grounded movie that does not provoke much magic or memorable scenery. Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is enduring a hot summer and Dudley (Harry Melling) provokes him by making fun of the fact that Harry is haunted by Cedric's death from The Goblet of Fire and also his mom's death. As a storm approaches, demeanors come into the tunnel sucking Dudley's so...

The Best 10 Talking Movie Animals

I have to admit when thinking about doing a list of the best movie talking animals, live-action or animated, I thought to myself: "This may be an easy list to do." I was certainly proven wrong because when researching every likable character, it was down to about 25-30. What that proves is that animators, storytellers and filmmakers work real hard on not just its special effects, hand drawn or computer animations, but its persona. How do we, the audience or the viewers, connect with a talking animal? How do you all get us to like the animal? About each of the characters I list have a different personality and charm that we have immediately or have grown to adjust to. Plus, I thought that this was a fun list to do bringing back some of the childhood talking animals that I grew up to watch and also maybe show some of much little cousins the characters that are lovable. 10. Mr. Fox (The Fantastic Mr. Fox) 9. Po (Kung Fu Panda series) 8. Baloo (The Jungle Book) 7...
