Alan Rickman, who unfortunately passed away at the age of 69 this morning, lent some gravitas onto his roles whether or not we liked his characters. But, he also had a fascinating way of providing some suspense when he pauses while reciting dialogue as to what he will do next to other characters. He can be scary, loving, evil, witty, happy, maybe, all of those emotions encompassing into one character in one scene. But, I truly can say that he was one great actor. So, here are my 5 favorite performances from Alan Rickman.
Die Hard
This is the character that propelled him into fame and stardom. He created one of the most cunning and astute villains of all time, Hans Gruber, as he is matched with Bruce Willis' John McClane. The reason why he was a great villain because he was calm and calculated most of the time that he's always a step ahead of McClane. He does whatever it takes to get his money. Happy trails, Hans!
Harry Potter franchise
"There will be no foolish wand-wavering or silly incantations in this class."
It is his first line as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter franchise that made us become interested in him as he wears the black robes and has a very strict attitude towards his students. His character was the most interesting because he can change any attitude in a second as on the inside, he cares so much about his students but he has a secret inside him that can change Harry Potter's life forever. I even thought he deserved an Oscar nomination for the very last movie in the franchise as he gives us an emotionally fantastic performance.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Man, Judge Turpin is a character that we despise because he is just a pure evil character that is emotionless even towards Sweeney Todd. This is a very underrated role for him as we learn about his character and how he connects with Todd. And, the last scene with him and Johnny Depp is quite brutal and cringe-worthy that the musical genre elevates to a whole other level.
Love Actually
I don't love this movie as much as many people do but I liked it enough and he was one of the reasons as to why I liked it enough. His character is one of the few that had some charm and wit but also underneath his charisma is guilt as he cheats with a co-worker behind his wife's back. Harry, as a character, can go either way as to whether or not that we like him in the end. What happens to him and his wife a year later? We do not exactly know. But, he is in the funniest scene with Rowan Atkinson. So, that's fine.
Galaxy Quest
This is an underrated sci-fi comedy that takes the making of a sci-fi show and turned it upside down as they are beamed into an alien spacecraft. Even though it is a large ensemble with Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver, Rickman's Alexander Dane provides the comic factor. He is quite invigorating and reliable when he plays an actor being an alien. We see what he can do with another character. It is fascinating.
I also want to do a quick shoutout to Something the Lord Made. A fascinating HBO drama with him as a doctor playing alongside Mos Def.
Anyway, RIP Alan Rickman. You will be missed. I will finish this post with the following clips of his work.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - Potions
