Reactions:
The Revenant leads the way with 12 nominations, with Mad Max: Fury Road following with 10 nominations.
Someone is going to bring this up. "But, all 20 actors in the four acting categories are Caucasian." More on that later.
There are some competitive categories including Best Picture, which in my opinion, it comes down to The Big Short, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant and Spotlight. It's a 4-movie race.
SURPRISES & SNUBS:
In the Best Picture race, no Carol, Straight Outta Compton or Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
-If they wanted to diversify, they would have nominated Straight Outta Compton. I thought it would because in almost every awards circuit, it always sneaks in. And, with the latter, success is always a liability to boost up ratings.
Lenny Abrahamson for Best Director was a big surprise. I thought Ridley Scott would get a chance for Best Director for The Martian.
Jennifer Lawrence is nominated again even though I did not find her performance quite that great.
Tom Hardy is another big surprise for The Revenant, but a nomination was long overdue. I think the reason they did not nominate Idris Elba is because I don't think the Academy is ready to consider a movie or a performance coming out from a digital cable outlet like Netflix.
Finally, a few acting nods for Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams for Spotlight.
No Aaron Sorkin, Quentin Tarantino or Amy Schumer in either of the screenplay categories. For the latter, I guess they still don't appreciate comedy.
I am very pleased to see John Williams nominated again especially for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
I was delighted to see Amy in the best documentary feature nomination list.
Well, no Peanuts Movie in the animated category. :( Sorry, Snoopy.
Best Original Song was the weakest category in my mind. No song from Love and Mercy? No "I'll See You Again" from Furious 7? WHAT?!?!?
We'll find out how the awards season will play out on February 28th.
