Well, as they did so, the Academy of Motion Pictures and Science released their Oscar nominations for the 90th Oscars early this morning as Andy Serkis and Tiffany Haddish read the nominations aloud. To be honest, there were some surprises in most of the top categories than anticipated because there was one movie that scored big that came out late in the year. But, I guess, that movie got sent to the right people for it to be nominated. Anyway, here is the full list of nominees in the 90th Oscars...

THOUGHTS & OPINIONS:
- "The Shape of Water" leads the way with 13 Oscar nominations, which is actually terrific for Fox Searchlight, Guillermo Del Toro and team.
- We have nine Best Picture nominees and even though I kind of anticipated Darkest Hour to be in there, Phantom Thread was a movie that snuck in there that I did not see coming. It is a very good movie. But, the thing that still bothers me is that you have one slot available. It could have been I, Tonya, The Big Sick, The Florida Projects or Logan.
- One of the biggest surprises was in the Best Director category where Martin McDonagh was bumped out for Paul Thomas Anderson for Phantom Thread. I have no complaints, however, I think people who love the movie will declare it as a controversy as they think Three Billboards... directed "itself". I am thinking there may be a double standard here as the Golden Globes did not nominate Peele and Gerwig. This may spell trouble for the momentum of Three Billboards.
- But on a happier note, I thought the Academy would not nominate Jordan Peele, they did. I am so glad that he and also Greta Gerwig got the recognition they deserve.
- Now, I do not think that Denzel Washington should have gotten nominated for Roman J. Israel, Esq. It was a decent performance in a bad movie. I would have given it to Tom Hanks, Jake Gyllenhaal or Hugh Jackman.
- But, there is one name omitted in the Best Actor category and that is James Franco's, who won awards for The Disaster Artist. The sexual assault/harassment allegations did hurt him in the end.
- Woody Harrelson is one of my favorite actors in recent years and he is terrific in Three Billboards..., but it would have been nice to spread the wealth to either Armie Hammer and Michael Stuhlbarg for Call Me By Your Name. I predicted Hammer would be left off, but another name that was in the running was bumped in.
- Besides Best Original Screenplay, why isn't The Big Sick getting recognized more? Holly Hunter not in the Best Supporting Actress category? Is the Academy nuts? I knew that Lesley Manville would sneak in but the most difficult was who I would bump. I frankly do not know.
- I am really glad that Logan got nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, it was so rich in its dialogue and storytelling. However, speaking of superhero movies, Wonder Woman got nothing which is a little bit of a surprise.
- I'm glad that Baby Driver got nominations in the editing and mixing categories.
- Blade Runner 2049 got a love in the technical categories. I'm hoping for Roger Deakins to get that first elusive win in Best Cinematography.
- Best Score and Song categories were strong this year and I am not complaining this year except I have not listened to the Mudbound song yet. The weakest for me is the song from Marshall. Sorry.
- Now I have to save the best for last (or the most controversial for last in my mind). The Boss Baby nominated for Best Animated Feature is baffling to me. It is a bad movie with a conventional plot. The LEGO Batman Movie and Captain Underpants were better than that generic film. Ugh.
That's all I have to say. Because of the Winter Olympics, the Oscars will be a little later than usual. It will be televised on ABC on March 4th.
