The 89th Academy Awards Predictions

Who will win this Oscar Sunday?
This awards season have been fairly easy but in a few categories, there have been some surprises.  Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor are the two major categories that will be a bit tricky. The only question is how political will it get after this crazy election. And, this is Jimmy Kimmel's first time hosting so how will he do? Here are my predictions for the top categories.

BEST PICTURE
Arrival
Fences
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell or High Water
Hidden Figures
La La Land
Lion
Manchester By The Sea
Moonlight

Will win & Should win: La La Land

Dark Horse: Moonlight

La La Land has been dominating this awards circuit with the PGA win and some other big awards wins. However, Moonlight has been doing well in some critics wins and a few other awards win. But, this is a predictable category and I see La La Land win Best Picture. Moonlight will create some suspense. And, I have to say: I don't understand the backlash.

BEST DIRECTOR
Damien Chazelle - La La Land
Mel Gibson - Hacksaw Ridge
Barry Jenkins - Moonlight
Kenneth Lonergan - Manchester By The Sea
Denis Villeneuve - Arrival

Will win & Should win: Damien Chazelle - La La Land

Dark Horse: Barry Jenkins - Moonlight

Chazelle has been getting all the awards for director and also that coveted DGA. So, it's his to lose. However, there has been talk for Barry Jenkins to get that award. But, I think he is a dark horse.

BEST ACTOR
Casey Affleck - Manchester By The Sea
Andrew Garfield - Hacksaw Ridge
Ryan Gosling - La La Land
Viggo Mortensen - Captain Fantastic
Denzel Washington - Fences

Will win: Denzel Washington - Fences

Should win: Casey Affleck - Manchester By The Sea

Dark Horse: Ryan Gosling - La La Land

This is a tricky category. Here's why. So, Casey Affleck has been getting a lot of awards for his great performance but this scandal has caught up to him because Denzel Washington won the SAG for his performance. Now, I think Affleck still deserves it but I think Washington will get the award because of Affleck's scandal. But, don't count out Gosling. It is a very slim chance, though.

BEST ACTRESS
Isabelle Huppert - Elle
Ruth Negga - Loving
Natalie Portman - Jackie
Emma Stone - La La Land
Meryl Streep - Florence Foster Jenkins

Will win & Should win: Emma Stone - La La Land

Dark Horse: Isabelle Huppert - Elle

Stone has been on a winning momentum since the Golden Globes win but she has gotten the SAG award and BAFTA award. The only upset will be Isabelle Huppert because she had a great performance in an otherwise good movie.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Mahershala Ali - Moonlight
Jeff Bridges - Hell or High Water
Lucas Hedges - Manchester By The Sea
Dev Patel - Lion
Michael Shannon - Nocturnal Animals

Will win & Should win: Mahershala Ali - Moonlight

Dark horse: Dev Patel - Lion

It's Ali because of his SAG award. But, this is also a tricky category because there have been different winners in the awards circuit. And, I pick Dev Patel for dark horse because he has an outside chance and the movie is slowly gaining momentum.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Viola Davis - Fences
Naomie Harris - Moonlight
Nicole Kidman - Lion
Octavia Spencer - Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams - Manchester By The Sea

Will win: Viola Davis - Fences

Should win: Naomie Harris - Moonlight

Dark Horse: None

This is the easiest category of the night. Davis wins. But, I think Harris gave the best supporting performance whereas Davis gave more of a great lead performance.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Hell or High Water
La La Land
The Lobster
Manchester By The Sea
20th Century Women

Will win: Manchester By The Sea

Should win: Hell or High Water

Dark Horse: La La Land

Manchester By The Sea will win. But, it's going to be disappointing that Hell or High Water will potentially get no awards.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Arrival
Fences
Hidden Figures
Lion
Moonlight

Will win & should win: Moonlight

Dark Horse: Arrival

Two great screenplays from both Moonlight and Arrival but Moonlight was beautifully structured.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
Kubo and the Two Strings
Moana
My Life as a Zucchini
The Red Turtle
Zootopia

Will win & should win: Zootopia

Dark Horse: Kubo and the Two Strings

Zootopia. That's it. But, Kubo may pull an upset.

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
13th
Fire at Sea
I am Not Your Negro
Life, Animated
O.J.: Made in America

Will win & should win: O.J.: Made in America

Dark Horse: 13th

I have seen the documentary and it is fantastic. But, I cannot count not just 13th, but also I am Not Your Negro or Life, Animated.

Well, that's that for the main categories. The Oscars will be televised and streamed on February 26th on ABC. Expect La La Land to get a lot of awards.

2015 Documentaries

I have only seen 6 documentaries this year which also includes Amy and I Am Chris Farley . But, I have to be honest, this has not been a particularly strong year for documentaries except for onethat got me emotionally and mentally as what I examine for when they uncover the truth or some facts from the people involved in these documentaries. But, here are the four I have seen this year: Listen To Me Marlon, Unrated, 4 stars This is the most insightful documentary of the year as we only hear Marlon Brando narrating his life and experiences what he has gone through regarding his family, his private life and his film experiences regarding The Godfather , Apocalypse Now , Last Tango in Paris , etc. It is like Marlon Brando came out of his grave to give us another profoundly moving movie only we hear his voice and scenery and nothing else. The Look of Silence, R, 3.5 stars Joshua Oppenheimer's follow-up documentary is a light-hearted but still-disturbing film regarding a

Daddy's Home 2 (2017), PG-13, ★1/2

The first Daddy's Home was surprisingly a financial success as I thought it was not as bad as many people thought. I thought it was a solid cable watch because it had enough laughs for that sort of mixed recommendation. I was not craving for a sequel for this movie because again, comedy sequels have a very bad record, however, the only difference is that it is not too late since the first movie came out a few years ago. But, this sequel is a reminder as to why we do not need a sequel to a hit comedy because this is a pretty much forgettable comedy, especially a holiday comedy...which I hade a guilty pleasure for. This did not work for me. Brad and Dusty (Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg) have become friends after the events of the first film and they set up a co-dad system where their two children, Megan and Dylan, spending time at each father's home. Dusty has re-married to writer Karen (Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio) and he is step-dad to Adrianna, Karen&
