The 88th Academy Awards Predictions

Who and what will win?
Holy moly! This has been a crazy awards season as different guilds awards have picked different movies to win Best Picture. So, it's a 3-movie race and we'll get to which will be in contention for Best Picture. Even, Best Supporting Actress was crazy as two people were getting awards. I mean, it's going to be an interesting telecast as Chris Rock is hosting because of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. Nobody is safe in the Dolby Theatre. Here are my predictions for the top categories. I will announce my picks on a YouTube video tomorrow.

Link: Caro the Movie Critic: 2016 Oscar Predictions (ALL CATEGORIES)

BEST PICTURE
The Big Short
Bridge of Spies
Brooklyn
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
The Revenant
Room
Spotlight

Will win: The Revenant

Should win: Spotlight

Dark Horse: The Big Short

It is going to be The Revenant by a nose over Spotlight and The Big Short. I would prefer Spotlight because of its story and structure (I would've picked Mad Max: Fury Road but there's no way in hell that the Academy would go for an action picture). But, The Big Short did win the PGA which is a huge precursor for them but that's the only big award it has won. I would not be upset with The Revenant winning because it's an extraordinarily poetic movie. It will have enough momentum to win.

BEST DIRECTOR
Lenny Abrahamson - Room
Alejandro Gonzalez Inñaritu - The Revenant
Tom McCarthy - Spotlight
Adam McKay - The Big Short
George Miller - Mad Max: Fury Road

Will win & Should win: Alejandro Gonzalez Inñaritu - The Revenant

Dark Horse: George Miller - Mad Max: Fury Road

It's Inñaritu's to lose as he reclaimed another DGA, which he is the first director to get back-to-back DGA awards. The only slight upset will be George Miller for his triumphant technical expertise for Mad Max. It's darn impressive from both directors.

BEST ACTOR
Bryan Cranston - Trumbo
Matt Damon - The Martian
Leonardo DiCaprio - The Revenant
Michael Fassbender - Steve Jobs
Eddie Redmayne - The Danish Girl

Will win & Should win: Leonardo DiCaprio - The Revenant

Dark Horse: Michael Fassbender - Steve Jobs

Who am I kidding? It's Leo's year. Not one person has a chance in this category since the movie came out. It's DiCaprio's Oscar to lose. Fassbender has not been campaigning as much, anyway.

BEST ACTRESS
Cate Blanchett - Carol
Brie Larson - Room
Jennifer Lawrence - Joy
Charlotte Rampling - 45 Years
Saoirse Ronan - Brooklyn

Will win & Should win: Brie Larson - Room

Dark Horse: Saoirse Ronan - Brooklyn

Larson has been claiming about almost every award imaginable for her great performance in Room. The only person who has a sneaky chance is Saoirse Ronan but Larson and DiCaprio are going to be getting a lot of pictures from the press as Best Actress and Best Actor respectively.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Christian Bale - The Big Short
Tom Hardy - The Revenant
Mark Ruffalo - Spotlight
Mark Rylance - Bridge of Spies
Sylvester Stallone - Creed

Will win & Should win: Sylvester Stallone - Creed

Dark horse: Tom Hardy - The Revenant.

Let me explain the Tom Hardy dark horse. Well, he'll be a sneaky underdog. That's it. It's a weak category. But, a lot of actors are rooting for Stallone to win the Oscar. And, by the way, so am I. I'm hoping he's going to say, "Yo, Adrian, we did it!" when he says his Oscar speech.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Jennifer Jason Leigh - The Hateful Eight
Rooney Mara - Carol
Rachel McAdams - Spotlight
Alicia Vikander- The Danish Girl
Kate Winslet - Steve Jobs

Will win: Alicia Vikander - The Danish Girl

Should win: Kate Winslet - Steve Jobs

Dark Horse: Kate Winslet - Steve Jobs

Alicia Vikander is gaining momentum for her natural and silently powerful performance in The Danish Girl even though I thought Kate Winslet was better in her role, as she has gotten some awards. I am picking Vikander because she got the SAG award but there might be a chance for a possible upset.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Bridge of Spies
Ex Machina
Inside Out
Spotlight
Straight Outta Compton

Will win & should win: Spotlight

Dark Horse: Inside Out

This is Spotlight's award. A big lock in this category.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
The Big Short
Brooklyn
Carol
The Martian
Room

Will win & should win: The Big Short

Dark Horse: Room

Again, another award that is a big lock. It's going to the Big Short.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
Anomalisa
Boy and the World
Inside Out
Shaun the Sheep
When Marnie Was There

Will win & should win: Inside Out

Dark Horse: When Marnie Was There

Inside Out. No Competition. Well, When Marnie Was There has a chance.

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
Amy
Cartel Land
The Look of Silence
What Happened, Miss Simone?
Winter on Fire: Ukraine's Fight for Freedom

Will win: Amy

Should win: Cartel Land

Dark Horse: The Look of Silence

It's a toss-up between two of the documentaries: Amy and Cartel Land. The Academy will choose Amy which is a very good documentary but if I were to vote, I'd pick Cartel Land. But, it's anyone's game.

The rest will be on the YouTube link. The Oscars are on February 28th on ABC. Don't miss it, at least, don't miss Chris Rock's monologue.

2015 Documentaries

I have only seen 6 documentaries this year which also includes Amy and I Am Chris Farley . But, I have to be honest, this has not been a particularly strong year for documentaries except for onethat got me emotionally and mentally as what I examine for when they uncover the truth or some facts from the people involved in these documentaries. But, here are the four I have seen this year: Listen To Me Marlon, Unrated, 4 stars This is the most insightful documentary of the year as we only hear Marlon Brando narrating his life and experiences what he has gone through regarding his family, his private life and his film experiences regarding The Godfather , Apocalypse Now , Last Tango in Paris , etc. It is like Marlon Brando came out of his grave to give us another profoundly moving movie only we hear his voice and scenery and nothing else. The Look of Silence, R, 3.5 stars Joshua Oppenheimer's follow-up documentary is a light-hearted but still-disturbing film regarding a ...

Daddy's Home 2 (2017), PG-13, ★1/2

The first Daddy's Home was surprisingly a financial success as I thought it was not as bad as many people thought. I thought it was a solid cable watch because it had enough laughs for that sort of mixed recommendation. I was not craving for a sequel for this movie because again, comedy sequels have a very bad record, however, the only difference is that it is not too late since the first movie came out a few years ago. But, this sequel is a reminder as to why we do not need a sequel to a hit comedy because this is a pretty much forgettable comedy, especially a holiday comedy...which I hade a guilty pleasure for. This did not work for me. Brad and Dusty (Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg) have become friends after the events of the first film and they set up a co-dad system where their two children, Megan and Dylan, spending time at each father's home. Dusty has re-married to writer Karen (Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio) and he is step-dad to Adrianna, Karen...

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), R, 4 stars

The stockbrokers worshipping Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) like a god. Wall Street. The clients, the adrenaline, the stocks, the money, the power, and the decadence. The former three pertains to the man's job, but the latter three pertains what any stockbroker wants in order to have the freedom to do whatever they want with the client's money. As Mark Hanna (Matthew McConaughey) would say, "The name of the game is: move the money from your client's pocket into your pocket." We basically spend three hours seeing all of these Wall-Street scumbags steal the clients' money into their own pockets and spend it on booze, drugs, women, and other insane things in more insane activities. I have witnessed here is a great movie that I would not watch repetitively. The movie starts with Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) blowing cocaine onto a hooker's butt and he and his brokers throwing a little person onto a board with a dollar sign in the center. It'...
